Pavucontrol didn't see the headphones using the USB connection. Connecting

shows HD-Audio Generic (Analog Stereo Duplex).

What might be the issue here?

Update:

Ignoring pavucontrol, I plugged the mini-phono plug into the front panel
audio out and played a CNN video. Mono sound: only one ear. Then I move the
plug to the rear panel audio output and heard sound in both earpieces. So it
works on that. So I'll use the rear panel phono socket. Next ...

I launched a Zoom test meeting, turned on audio and video; tested microphone
(confirmed it's working just as pavucontrol and my watching the Scarlett
Solo input indicator do). The Zoom hardware dialog showed my voice being
received, but no audio output. The choices on Zoom are the same as for
pavucontrol, and none of the three showed output.

YouTube video output stereo audio to the headphones.

So, news site and YouTube videos: sound to the headphones. Zoom, no sound.
WTF?
