If he's going to the BYU law school, there are three choices that
they approve. The Thinkpad is the best of the lot (and my second
choice in current laptops, after the Powerbook). There are two
Thinkpad options; for the 15 inch screen, he'd need to go with
the R-50.

Dell has had a few good laptops over the years, but they're all a
lot heavier than they need to be for the features they offer, and
they've also had some models that give lemons a bad name. Beyond
that, their customer service and tech support definitely leave
something to be desired.

Again, I'd go with the Thinkpad. Either of the models that the
law school recommends (the R-50 or the T-41) will work very well.
I probably wouldn't put Fedora on it, though: lately I've had
much better results from Mepis, and most of the recommendations
I've seen from others have been for (K)Ubuntu.
