My brother was in the same boat 1.5 years ago for his poli-sci
undergrad. I recommended the Apple Powerbook (though iBook would be fine
too). That's turned out to be one of my best computer-related
recommendations of all time. He has had no complaints, and loves the
complimentary comments he gets from on-lookers. It'll cost you an extra
$200-500 for the Apple.
I'm also interested in bad experiences with service deptartments and
such. What would you recommend staying away from?
Not sure about running Fedora on an Apple, but I personally can't
imagine why anyone would run Linux on an Apple. About brands to stay
away from: This is a moving target. Laptops are like fruit. Every
manufacturer has put out a rotten model, and it's hard to predict based
on past performance. I've had great luck with Dells (I'm on my second
Dell laptop right now) and I *abuse* my laptops, but others report
problems with Dell. I've heard mixed reviews about every other brand as
well, including HP, Toshiba, Gateway (are they around anymore?), and
others. I've never heard a bad report about an Apple laptop, but that
could be because of the smaller number of Apple laptops present.
