I take a fatalist approach. I am positive that with or without people, life on earth with carry on. If we can't be responsible guardians and instead totally trash this planet to the point that we can't survive, we'll die off and the earth won't care. Everyone should read (not watch, *read*) Jurassic Park, the two important tenets being life always finds a way and the earth doesn't need you.
