I guess I could just share how I do my music library. I started it
before iTunes was around and before many of the "music library" apps
that are out now. I usually just rip my CD's using audiograbber
(http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/). Yes, I know, I am mentioning a
windows app on a linux mailing list. I am shamed. Then I have a
directory structure that I store all of my music in. It is something to
the effect of <Artist>/<Album>/<Track Number>-<Track Name>.mp3. After
that, when I want to listen to a particular song or album, I just browse
to the director and play what I want. I have tried some apps that have a
"library" such as songbird and banshee. But I usually just go back to
finding my mp3s by hand.

By ripping directly to mp3 you will loose some audio quality. But if you
use something like 320Kbps for the encoding rate, it should be too bad.
I'm sure there is some audio purist out there who will say that all mp3s
sound like crap compared to other formats. But mp3s work just about
anywhere these days. If you want to go with something free of license
issues you can use something like ogg.

Anyways. There is my $.02.
