ajax for the gui.  We have the Head Rush Ajax book at my work.  It's a 
nice introduction to ajax for people who already know how to program.  
You may want to look at flash instead, but I think those two are the 
best way to do things on the web.  For the back end I'd recommend 
python,ruby, or php(I always use php).
