I used to live right next to the UVa grounds, and I can tell you that
it's an absolutely beautiful place. I know there are some web sites
that will help you pick your graduate school based on a bunch of
criterea, like how many professors, how many students, how much grant
money they get, how much the professors publish and some metric meant
to gauge the quality of their publications. I can't remember what the
name of the site is, but hopefully my description will be enough for
you to google it.
There may be a difference depending on whether you're doing a Master's
or a PhD, and which particular program you're interested in. Are you
going to do CS? Is the availability of TAships or RAships going to be
an issue for you to do it financially? I'd also take into
consideration cost of living in the two areas.
