No, it doesn't.  However, looking behind your car and up and down the
sidewalk in both directions to see whether there are children in your
driveway (or children who are walking in the direction of your
driveway) before you get into your vehicle to back out seems
reasonable to me.  I do it myself before I back up - it doesn't take
very long.  Of course I am also more careful than most people about
almost everything driving-related.

I assume nothing more than what was in the news - a source that I
freely admit is seldom accurate and never precise.  But given what
we've been told - the child was laying in the driveway and was killed
by a vehicle backing up - may we not assume that a more careful
investigation of the driveway would have prevented this tragedy?

Again, I am not advocating criminal charges.  But wouldn't it be
better to call this what it is - negligence - and not use the word
"accident", which implies that no-one is at fault and that it couldn't
have been prevented?
