I think the difference in connotation between "negligent" and
"accidental" in this case is overwhelmed by the horror that most people
experience when they contemplate something like this happening to them.
If they continue to act carelessly after hearing the story, the change
in wording is probably not the sort of thing that would motivate them to
change.
