Having worked for, and having talked with the owners of sub-contracted
companies of Novell, I've found this to be precisely the case.  The
owner of the business formerly known as "Xponential" told me that is
exactly what happened to him.  He was laid off from Novell, and told
his position was being outsourced to an outside company.  He was then
told he could re-apply for the new position if he fit the bill - so he
was laid off, formed a company, and was re-hired to do exactly the
same thing, having filled the "outsourced" position himself.

Seemed a bit strange to me.
