Thus why Radio Shack is named Radio Shack. Before geeks all hacked
code on computers, they hacked HAM radio circuits, and there was
enough of a community to support a retail store that catered to them,
not to mention a bunch of magazines and whatnot.
You used to be able to go to your local Radio Shack and get all the
stuff you needed to build the projects you could find in the latest
issue of Popular Electronics. You could go to the hardware store and
get all the stuff you needed to build fabrication and machining tools
for the projects in Popular Mechanics. At least there's still a high
level of commercial support for hobby woodworking, and I think the
'Maker' movement is starting to bring back electronics and to a lesser
degree mechanical hobby support.
