well - the newer build instructions for mplayer include building libavcodec (and a couple others from ffmpeg) into the binary. Im afraid I haven't kept up with development over the years so Im not sure why this decision was made but I imagine that it either speeds up things or helps with requirements. That is why you see such a difference in codec usage though.
