This goes back to one of those old-school UNIX arguments about what
"local" was supposed to be. I am sure that I don't care... but for
clarity I have always kept my linux machines (and now my mac) with most
apps in /usr - You will notice that various "flavors" of linux will vary
on this too. Red Hat/Fedora (which is what I used for years) was always
a non "local" distro.

I have no idea why mplayer would specify "local" - all it cares about
is that any external codecs are in the same path.
