Michael to the rescue I expect. I am totally lost in the DSL
environment - how do I tell Slimserver to find my music folder on the
USB external drive? (what's the correct path syntax?)

Be sure the drive was plugged in when you booted. In the bottom right (well, sometimes it sticks to the top left, don't know when and why...) you'll find a little toolbox with a few buttons. The third from top should be labeled "fd0" or "hda0" or something. These are Linux' names for your drives: fd0 - floppy, hda0 - first disk etc. USB sticks often are recognized as sda0/1... push that button to cycle through the drives. Do you find some sda* entry? Watch the button below: is it "mounted"? If not, hit the "unmounted" button to try to mount it.

Once your drive is mounted, you refer to it as /mnt/sda0 etc. in SlimServer.

Where do I find
a 'My Computer' type of browser to let me see what's 'mounted' or not?

The only option you have is the Norton Command style "Midnight Commander". Right click the desktop, select Apps/Tools/Midnight Commander. Then go up to the system's root, enter /mnt, and you'll see what drive's are available.

Not quite "My Computer" style, but still better than the shell to start with :-)
