I'm getting a bit out of my depth here. AFAICT the Virgin station is being handled by the SB3. However, the metadata (i.e. song & programme info) is still being processed by slimserver so slimserver still has to read the Virgin stream and when you do a browse, this reading of this stream is affected and then slimserver decides to restart the stream to SB3 even though the SB3 is probably decoding OK.
Since this may explain why both BBC and Virgin have problems even though the decoding is different, your original guess at the problem seems right - the database activity is delaying slimserver from reading data from the internet. In which case 6.5 with splitscanner and MySQL should help - however some builds of 6.5 are a bit flaky and you might find it too buggy. You can always try and if you don't like it - revert.
