I just did a profile on the PPC mplayer - the following are the top few
routines. The last one post is mp_msg which is the routine which prints
message - all the rest are RealAudio decode ("cook") - and the top 3
have a lot of floating point operations. I think they may have to be
rewritten to work fast on ARM if (as I suspect) the ARM processor has
no native floating point.

Code:
--------------------

Each sample counts as 0.01 seconds.
  % cumulative self self total
time seconds seconds calls ms/call ms/call name
  21.90 0.46 0.46 992 0.46 1.82 cook_decode_frame
  19.05 0.86 0.40 1984 0.20 0.41 cook_imlt
  17.62 1.23 0.37 992 0.37 0.37 mono_decode
  16.67 1.58 0.35 1984 0.18 0.18 ff_fft_calc_c
  10.48 1.80 0.22 62 3.55 3.55 play
  7.62 1.96 0.16 1984 0.08 0.08 gain_compensate
  3.33 2.03 0.07 1984 0.04 0.04 ff_fft_permute
  0.95 2.05 0.02 445 0.04 0.04 mp_msg
