Julian,
I'm afraid it's something much more subtle than a general networking problem. I say this because:
I agree: it's not a general networking issue. I rather thought of a communication problem on port 9000. What server setting are you using in SlimRemote? localhost or something else?
1) Surely the fact that SlimRemote displayed my artist list and allowed me to see the list of albums for each artist demonstrates that it can contact the server.
While almost all communication passes by port 9090 (CLI), the coverart is downloaded using standard web requests (eg. http://myserver:9000/cover.jpg or similar).
4) I can access the SlimServer web interface from this machine (and it is running on the default port 9000). I can also access the system from all other computers on my network so there's no firewall blocking.
That's fine then.
You say that you expect a file "cover.jpg". What happens if the files in the music directories are actually called "folder.jpg"? The SlimServer web interface handles this fine.
What's the image's url within the browser? Right click -> properties or similar should tell you.
Does the name just get translated to "cover.jpg" at the server?
I thought so, yes. cover.jpg is the full size image while thumb.jpg is a resized version.
then could it be something more subtle like a buffer overrun when the coverart jpg is downloaded?
How large are these images? I'm using rather small "full size" artwork (< 500x500px). Maybe I'll add server side resizing for 6.5 server. But this wouldn't help you.
