Another possibility would be to hand edit the configure file and set the CPU to a 386 with no MMX, SSE etc.
Excellent! I disabled about anything I found like mmx, sse & co. and now at least mplayer doesn't crash any more. I'll test AlienBBC tomorrow. It's time for me.
