I am using 1024kb for my 25k tracks. It is normal that the MusicIP
import during the scan uses lots of memory. When It is finished the
memory should be available and the swapfile usage should decrease, this
can be all monitored with top during scanning. I was surprised by myself
about the memory use. Memory usage seems to accumulate during the
import, therefore the more tracks you have the more memory is used,
maybe this is also linked to the emulation. You might consider to
increase your swapfile further if it continues to crash....
I checked at home and both, the receipes.xml as well as the mmm.ini
should be in your Musicmagic Home directory (/home/pi/.MusicMagic/ in my
case), where also your cache database resides.
my mmm.ini looks like:

[mix]
mixsize=50 tracks
restrict=12 tracks
style=80
variety=5
seed=1
[server]
proxy=0
host=
proxyport=0
authentication=0
user=
password=
[services]
key=
cache=/home/pi/.MusicMagic/default.m3lib
port=10002
tivo=0
upnp=0
api=1
readonly=0
refresh=15

I will update the first post about copying mmm.ini and receipes.xml into
the homedirectory of MusicMagic when I will have time
