OK - now I had the issue of spottily connect playing the same track again for the first time.
My setup: piCorePlayer with LMS server, three clients: Chromecast Audio, squeezelite on a pi, and squeeze lite on a MacBook. All are enabled for Spotify Connect. As far as I remember, I followed this procedure (did not try to reproduce): Tried to play on the Chromecast, long delay before starting, stopped the play (I think).
