Ok ... All FIXED ! After a bit of scratching around and sweaty palms I found a way of installing a beta version of Daphile that is considerably newer than the current stable release ....
All good so far .... not had time to see if there is a downside .. but I have to say the lift in quality of FLAC lossless is well worth the effort ..
