Sorry to take so long to get back to you. Busy weekend.

Looks like we have some moving goal posts and to a large degree this
seems to be solved. I sat down today to do some thorough testing and
provide logs as you suggested. Before starting I noticed a firmware
update had become available in the last couple of days for my receiver
so I downloaded and applied it. This certainly seems to have had some
effect. I'd also be interested to know if you've made any changes in the
last few days to the bridge that may have had an impact?

After applying the update, I thought I'd systematically try all the
available settings and gather logs for each. I've set up a little
playlist that covers most audio types in my library and ran this
playlist with each setting. Details of the playlist are as follows:

Track 1: ALAC 44.1/16
Track 2: ALAC 48/24
Track 3: ALAC 192/24
Track 4: MP3
Track 5: AAC

Below, in order are the results I found:

Supported codecs: pcm
PCM format: raw
24 bits PCM: plain 24 bits
Result: 24bit fails to play, 16 bit plays, mp3 won't play, AAC plays
Log: https://pastebin.com/JRUEE5hf

Supported codecs: pcm
PCM format: raw
24 bits PCM: packed type 1
Result: 24bit fails to play, 16 bit plays, mp3 won't play, AAC plays
Log: https://pastebin.com/Zz4M87AU

Supported codecs: pcm
PCM format: raw
24 bits PCM: 16 bits always
Result: 16bit ALAC plays fine, 48/24 recognised as 48/16 plays fine,
192/24 recognised as 44.1/16 plays REALLY slow, mp3 won't play, AAC
plays fine
Log: https://pastebin.com/FrTJtPNA

Supported codecs: pcm
PCM format: raw
24 bits PCM: 16 bits raw only
Result: 16bit ALAC plays fine, 48/24 recognised as 48/16 plays fine,
192/24 recognised as 44.1/16 plays REALLY slow, mp3 won't play, AAC
plays fine
Log: https://pastebin.com/5VX1bqVC

Supported codecs: pcm
PCM format: wav
24 bits PCM: plain 24 bits
Result: 24bit plays and recognised as 24bit, 16 bit plays, mp3 won't
play, AAC plays
Log: https://pastebin.com/B4T9Fz1h

These results a quite different to what I was experiencing a week ago
and there's no sign of the original problem, so I'm not sure how much
can be attributed to the firmware update or any changes in the bridge.
Once I achieved the (mostly) working version, I've left it at that and
will see how that goes for a while.

You mentioned previously that using wav introduced other potential
problems. I'd be interested to know what they are so I can decide
whether this is worth pursuing further.

At this stage, it seems the only outstanding issue is non-playing of mp3
any obvious fixes for that?

BTW as an aside, I had great difficulty getting a complete log. It
always seemed to get truncated despite what I entered for the max size
setting.

Once gain thanks for all your help on this.
