Using the name with -o is best as usb devices almost alway change id on reboot.
The picoreplayer team found an issue with squeezelite device selection recently which you may have run into. If the -r and -o options are used squeezelite does not validated the device exists before starting the output thread. This causes squeezelite to wait forever for the device to become available or until you killed it. I have a fix, but it's a big change to the startup process, that needs lots of testing.
