Running version 1.1.0.5 I'm now totally confused, sorry. I'm not sending
a log because my brain has fried. I've done many many attempts but I
get mostly noise on almost every pcm setting except (I think) when
playing 16/44100 to 48000 with max set, and even then sometimes I think
I may do. There are just too many variables, including the limitations
of the player itself. Having gone back to flac (and making sure LMS has
no custom conversion, and c3po is not active) I now can't get native
24/96000 flacs to play. Weirdly, 24/192000 does, as well as 16/44100.

I'm now not even sure what you meant by "and w/". I think I understand
the re-encoding, but what's "w/"?

LMS 7.9.1 on VortexBox Midi box, Xubuntu 17.10, FLACs 16->24 bit,
44.1->192kbps.  Touch & EDO. 2nd Touch standard.
LMS plugin UPnP/DLNA Bridge to MF M1 CLiC (to A308CR amp & ESLs) &
Marantz CR603 UPnP renderers.
Alternatively Minimserver & Upplay to same & to upmpdcli/mpd PC
renderers.
Squeezelite to Meridian USB Explorer DAC to PC speakers/headphones.
Wireless Xubuntu 17.10 laptop firefox/upplay or Android 'phone with
Squeeze-Commander/BubbleUPnP controls LMS/Minimserver.
