Well after 3 days I am happy to report that updating to 1.6.2 has made a dramatic difference. Only the very occasional rebuffer now so I am happy. Thank you so much bpa.
I have tried various options in the settings but the rebuffering events are so infrequent now that I cannot tell if any setting is better or worse than any other.
