Yes that's it - the client is usually already awake when the server
awakes. SLX is running in the background and has the exclamation mark on
the tray icon. When the window is visible it has the Settings page open
with the Server not responding msg.
Thinking about this a little, why does it go to the Settings screen
after server timeout? If it just had the previously active library
screen that would be fine as it should just reconnect on any actions?

Otherwise I guess an intermittent retry after 8 mins would do it, but
would this keep sending WOLs? This might not be good for folks who want
the server to sleep without having to close down SLX if it's not
playing.
