You are right I have not done a clear and rescan recently and I think I have actually turned off the display of Artist Artwork anyway because it was often slow to display.
It would certainly be super slow if you didn't have local artwork available. With local artwork and the scanner pre-caching them, browsing artists should be as fast as browsing albums.
