The close apps button (the square) doesn't seem to work on the phone - only the home button - they are not on-screen but part of the phone's physical screen. I figured out the settings route, but it's a bit laborious compared to the newer android 7 where the on-screen buttons do work. As you probably guessed I'm no 'expert' with android ...
