I use DogStar and it seems to be the most reliable.  You'll know if
it's getting all the channel data because the songs playing for all the
different channels will be listed under "Now Playing" in the web
interface.

Disabling the WMA can be done from Server Settings -> File types. 
Uncheck the option that says:

Windows Media / Windows Media / (built-in)

Your DSL probably isnt 3mb, but regardless it looks like you're using
the low bitrate streams so it should be able to keep up.  Could just be
the quality of your connection and your providers connection.  I use the
high bitrate streams (which may have better priority, but are
significantly larger) and find them pretty reliable.  You can also try
changing some of the buffering/timeout settings in Server Settings ->
Network.  I don't think these apply to direct streaming to the player,
but if you disable the built-in decoding it'll be done on the server
which is able to buffer more.
