None of the AlienBBC developers have an OSX system so AlienBBC installation instruction for OSX have been written by users. Unfortunately it is hard to know when they go out of date.
If you downloaded the mplayerhq mplayer - then you have installed the GUI version as that is what is built for OSX - it includes the command line mplayer but hidden.
