Are you using the latest git/devel version? As on the iPad Mini with iOS
12 that I have access to, both methods seemed pretty similar. However,
if this new mehtod turns out to be significantly slower then I'll
probably leave as is.

Yes, latest devel vs. master, wiping cache. On iPhone 7 running iOS 14.0.1 I can't get the old code to show blank screens with a single flick, but it's pretty much standard on devel.

On an iPad Air 2 with iOS 14.0.1 I'd see the page render partially while scrolling by with master, the same white pages with devel. But it was hard to get a screenshot from a partially rendered page, as it would updated pretty quickly.

Even with the iPhone 5s running iOS 12.4.8 master would hardly ever render a temporarily fully blank list, where that's pretty much standard on devel.

Whether the final rendering is slower or not I actually don't know. But the perceived performance definitely is "slower" due to more time spent seeing whitespace instead of whatever information.
