You don't need to make the registry changes unless you want to start playing from a LastFM web page.
Sometimes LastFM is just too busy, although it was fine for me on Sunday. I'd suggest checking your internet radio timeout setting: Server Settings->Network->Radio Station Timeout 15 seconds works OK for me, but 5 which I think is the default, is not long enough.
