Played around with a few things and success - I have replicated the errors that you see. When working, my CD drive has both Y cable plugs plugged into two sockets of a single powered USB hub. When I copied your h/w setup , with CD USB data into Pi and separate external PSU for CD USB power cable - I replicated the same errors. I tried a few PSU (standard mains USB chargers) of varying types and capacity. Most worked OK but with one older PSU - the errors happened - I got long gaps in playing. Not sure what the issue could be maybe 5V are not quite the same since not form same source.
