OK. It was worth a shot.
I went back to "bad supply" and got errors again but slightly different: dmesg now has "over-current" warnings and the CD playing got stuck in a groove - played the same 3 secs over and over again while logging the "Read" errors but timeout was 0 secs. I think all I can conclude is that PSU can cause this symptom but maybe it is not the only way.
