Many many thanks Danco and BPA - there at last (and I've learned along
the way).

I reset the QNAP to assigning IP addresses automatically, via a new
install. Brilliant, that gave me connectivity downstream again. But no
internet access.

However still no entries in My Network Places or My Computer etc.

That said whenever I tried to access the QNAP it kept searching for an
IP address of 192.168.2.4 when 192.168.2.6 had been automatically
assigned.

So disconnected the Mapped network Drive and re-connected it, this time
specifying the 192.168.2.6 address rather than a folder name (remember
that no NAS workgroup appeared under My Network Places).

Voila - FLAC, Alien BBC, Internet Radio and access to the mapped drive
!

Still don't wholly understand all the ins and outs but very happy now.
I think this is the real weakness of the SB3 and Slimserver - if it all
works following a straightforward install it's brilliant. But when
something goes wrong the manuals aren't sufficient and one is thrust
onto the kind folks in the Forum. Trouble is that for mere mortals like
me, things can get quite technical very quickly.

So who fancies writing the Ladybird guide to Slimserver ???

Thanks again
