If you run mplayer without a specific output device it will look for an
audio output devices - I don't think there is one on a Linkstation so
mplayer will stop.
Try the following - it specifies output to a file called test.wav

Another point to check. The configuration you use requires /dev/fd
devices - these are not always available on NAS. Does your NAS have
/dev/fd devices ?
