Your follow-up is pretty close to the mark, if I understand it all
correctly, which is:
The 'brightness off time' setting only applies to the 'off' condition -
ie. if you have it playing through the 'off-time', it won't dim until
the player turns 'off', either manually or 'sleep'. In the morning
(on-time), it goes back to whatever brightness the 'off' condition was
at, at the 'off' time.
I guess the way its programmed, it assumes that if its playing, you
want to be able to read the display at the normal 'day-time' setting.
So it doesn't work exactly the way I would want it to, but I haven't
got into it enough to figure out how to fix it exactly, so I don't
complain. It does make sure it goes dim when its off, and not playing,
so I don't have the wife whacking me on the shoulder to dim the thing
too often! (when using sleep, it will go bright for 15 seconds before
the dim kicks in - go figure...)
