I don't have a Mac. I use 1.0rc1 on Linux and Windows systems.

I have "unwrapped" the 1.0rc1 for Intel Mac systems and provided ftp
access to the command line mplayer executable and a number of Mac users
are using it without problems.

Have you tried the mplayer in a Terminal window and tested it with the
standalone test. The banner sometimes indicate specific problem which
can sometimes be overridden by extra command line options.

For some Mac users (mainly G3 or 10.3.x) the build options were wrong
and so they compiled mplayer for their own system.

Under Server Settings/Filetypes - you will see those filetypes which
could use mplayer. Typically on a Mac system this will be RTSP and WMA.
WMA is normally handled by an SB3 but if you disable WMA or use
SoftSqeueze then mplayer will be used.

Many stations use WMA (e.g. Virgin) - in this web page
http://www.australianliveradio.com all the stations with the 3rd column
with the "4 colour circle" use WMA. Many of the ABC stations seems to
have both RealAudio and WMA URLs.

When a station is playing use right cursor on remote to get details of
the stream characteristics.
