Thanks for the suggestions, bpa. In order:

1. I've checked that mplayer.sh is executable. It has permissions of
755.
2. After using chroot to move into the slimserver system, navigating to
/opt/mplayer/bin, mplayer comes up with the help text if I execute
./mplayer from the shell.
3. I disabled RTSP-FLAC (RTSP-MP3 was already disabled on account of
lame not working properly on the TS-109). I found exactly the same
error in the log as before. 

>From another, non-chroot shell, I tried invoking mplayer from the
actual path of the binary, viz.
/share/HDA_DATA/etch/opt/mplayer/bin/mplayer and was greeted with a "no
such file or directory" error, which I can't quite understand. Any
further ideas gratefully received.
