Unfortunately editing mplayer.sh didn't work either, though it did send a stream of data to the terminal when I tried to invoke it from the command line. Also, the log contained the line 'Opened stream' though there was still no sound from the Squeezebox. I have fixed the problem, though, by the expedient of reinstalling Slimserver entirely. It would have been more satisfying to figure out what was happening, though.
