I have just tried which and whereis.

whereis does not seem to do anything on my Mac.

which does work, but I am not quite sure how to deal with the space in
the application name.

None of

which Mplayer\ OSX
which Mplayer\ OSX.app

or similar things with quotes provide the right item.

Interestingly, which Mplayer finds mplayer (note the upper case and
lower case respectively) in /usr/local/bin

I notice that /usr/local/bin is on my PATH. It certainly was not when I
first installed mplayer a long time ago. I don't know if Apple has
changed things or if I made a change that has persisted through
upgrades (and even change of computer).

I put a note in the Developer forum about some changes to the way the
Mac uses Unix. I don't know any of the details, just referenced
something I had read, and I doubt if this is relevant, but thought I
ought to mention it.
