You haven't created your own custom.map files or modified the Default.map file in the IR directory, have you ?
If you have, this will override the standard commands and might be the reasons for your problems. If you have a default installation of SlimServer and have configured MusicIP and do see the M icon in the upper right corner of the SqueezeBox display, it should launch the mixer if you hold the play button on the remote down for a second or two.
