You definitely should not need to fiddle with permissions on the file system 
level to get shares working. Leave this to FreeNAS' admin tools.

If SC is run as a user which can't even read its own files, you'll be in 
trouble.

The problem with simplified systems is that you have to follow their way of 
doing things. As soon as you start to fiddle with it, you risk to break things. 
FreeNAS (and SlimNAS) tries to create a file server easily. But if you change 
stuff it expects in its own way, you're likely to break it.

I'd recommend you try to create as clean and default install as possible, only 
using FreeNAS tools to manage permissions etc.
