I don't know the the OSX location for skins, but slimfx was implemented purely as a skin. The extra functionality came from running in the Flash player and accessing the CLI. However, due to security changes in recent versions of the Flash player, I had to write a plugin that enables slimfx to access the CLI. It's attached to a message near the end of the thread...though you also have to modify one file after installing it (as described in a follow up message). A lot of work!
