The Volume=0 is a gain setting - which tells mplayer how much to increase / decrease the volume after decoding the RealAudio stream. So a setting of 0 means don't change volume.
Your problem is with RealAudio streams so testing with podcast, Virgin etc do not add any info since they are not RealAudio and use different protocols. Since SC is waiting for data but none arrive your problem is either mplayer or socketwrapper which is a helper application. Often security s/w prevents these apps from running and using networks. Make sure mplayer and socketwrapper are considered to be "trusted" app by your security s/w and can do all sorts of communications/networking.
