Since this sonds more like an SC than an iPeng issue to me you might

Generally speaking:
100% CPUI utilization sounds like a hanging process, indeed, what were
you doing when that happened?
2.5 Gig of VM is also too much, mine uses ~700 MB-1 Gig
Weired free disk space changes on Mac are quite common and can usually
be attributed to the Application Installer, Spotlight and TimeMachine.
But you are right, after restarting SC I sometimes get a free Gigabyte
of additional free memory, too.
