Yes. Your browser will show an option to add an exception to accept the
certificate. If you do that, it will work.
This means the certificate is insecure, but then you are not providing
any personal information or something anyway.

The sole reason for using SSL is that without it, the username/password
combination you use would be transferred in plain text. A lot of people
use the same username/password combinations on many sites so it's not
wise to do that. In many cases (company networks, open WiFi access
points, Internet Café,...) it is extremely simple to log such a password
so I prefer to have some security. To capture credentials now you would
have to start a dedicated attack. Whcih would still be possible but
requires waaay more effort than to have a look at a log file...
