Thank you so much for your help Erland! The issue with the tags was due to a misconfiguration of MP3Tag's new tag mapping feature (http://forums.mp3tag.de/index.php?showtopic=9646&hl=tag%20mapping&st=15). The issue has or could have affected at least 3 different tags.
I will definitely choose solution no. 2 as regards the retaggning, after fixing configuring MP3Tag properly. That will take some time just to load all files into MP3Tag and changing them and then to do a backup and subsequent wipe and rescan in SBS. If I have some time and energy left after that I will continue with configuring CustomScan using your hints. Once again thanks for your help.
