Well this is quite embarassing but I just solved my dilemma and it's not related to iPeng whatsoever. Turns out there was an access restriction (IP based) on the Qnap I had forgotten about.
As soon as that was corrected iPeng has worked flawlessly. It's amazing how something can replace the SB Controller in a matter of seconds. Can't wait to try it on the iPad when it's out.
