Hi bpa,

first of all, thanks for the very quick reply!

sbel...@slim$ cat /proc/asound/devices
  2: : timer
  3: : sequencer
  4: [ 0- 2]: digital audio capture
  5: [ 0- 1]: digital audio playback
  6: [ 0- 0]: digital audio playback
  7: [ 0- 0]: digital audio capture

 10: [ 1- 3]: digital audio playback
 11: [ 1- 0]: hardware dependent

This is just for the internal sound card, no Edirol UA-25 plugged in:

sbel...@slim$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xfbbf8000 irq 22

Yes, in theory I know all this. And even in practice: For several years
now I regularly use my Edirol UA-25 and Audacity to record live
concerts and master them with Audacity. All without any problems.

It's just the fact that I cannot get the sound cards to capture
playback. In alsamixer e.g. "Capture" is set to 100 and activated,
"Capture 1" is set to 100 and activated. However, as "Input Source" and
"Input Source 1" I only have the choice between "Mic" and "Line".

Interestingly enough I now installed gnome-alsamixer in order to have a
look whether that presents some different options to me. When I start
it, I get two warnings "No idea what to do for mixer element Input
Source". Oh well ...

I am sure the secret is somewhere in the 111 lines of "amixer" output.
So if that is of some help, I'll post it.

Yes, that is the easiest part. As mentioned, problem is I do not seem
to be able to record currently playing sound. Whatever setting I have
tried now, I either get loud noise or total silence, but nothing like
the playing sound.

Greetings,
Stefan
